3 ways to view a LinkedIn profile without logging in

LinkedIn asks you to sign in before it shows most of a profile. Read a public profile by hand, with one API call or through an AI agent, and see what each way leaves out.

You can view a public LinkedIn profile without logging in, but LinkedIn limits what a signed-out visitor sees. Three ways work. You can open the profile in a logged-out browser, call an API, or ask an AI agent to do it. They differ in how much you get back and how many profiles you can read.

The short version

A word on accounts before you read on. Ways 2 and 3 need no LinkedIn account. They do need a Stophy account, and the API needs a Stophy API key. Stophy has no free tool for LinkedIn profiles. I ran ways 2 and 3 on the public profile of Satya Nadella, and the output below is what came back.

Why read a LinkedIn profile without logging in

People look at a profile without signing in for a few plain reasons.

  • You have no LinkedIn account, or you do not want to make one to check one person.
  • You have a long list of profiles to check before a round of sales calls. Opening each one by hand takes an afternoon.
  • You are building a product or an agent that needs a person's headline, location and roles as data and not as a page.

The first two are fine by hand. The last two need code.

1. View a LinkedIn profile by hand in a logged-out browser

The simplest way is to open the profile link in a browser where you are not signed in to LinkedIn. A private window works. With only a name, search it in a search engine. LinkedIn's help says search tools such as Google and Bing can show a person's public profile.

What you see is a limited view. LinkedIn's own help page says a public profile is a simplified version of the full profile and that not all sections can be shown publicly. It also says that to see a full profile, visitors may need to log in. Each member chooses which sections are public, and a member can turn the public profile off.

What a logged-out visitor sees changes by person. LinkedIn's help page on public profile visibility has the current rules.

One more thing to know. If you do sign in and open someone's profile, they can see that you came. LinkedIn's help page on profile viewers lists three settings. The person can see your name and headline, a few details such as your job title and company, or only "LinkedIn Member" if you chose private mode.

Honest take. This is the right way for one profile, and it costs nothing. It stops being useful the moment you have ten, because you cannot copy the data out in a clean form, and a sign-in prompt can stop you halfway down the page.

2. Read a LinkedIn profile with the Stophy API

For a list of profiles, or a feature inside your own product, call the API. Stophy is the web data API for AI agents, and the LinkedIn profile endpoint takes a profile link or the part after /in/ and returns the profile as JSON.

Send profileId with the slug, or profileUrl with the full link. You need a Stophy API key. You do not need a LinkedIn account or a LinkedIn API key. Sign up to get one.

terminal
curl -X POST https://api.stophy.dev/v1/linkedin/profile \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $STOPHY_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "profileId": "satyanadella" }'

Or from a terminal with the CLI.

terminal
stophy linkedin profile --profileId satyanadella

Add --json to the CLI command to print the data as JSON. This is the response I got from the API today, with roles cut to two entries and education cut to one.

response
{
"success": true,
"data": {
"profileId": "satyanadella",
"profileUrl": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/satyanadella",
"name": "Satya Nadella",
"headline": "Chairman and CEO at Microsoft",
"location": "Redmond, Washington, United States",
"about": "As chairman and CEO of Microsoft, I define my mission ...",
"followers": 12210123,
"roles": [
{
"title": "Chairman and CEO",
"companyName": "Microsoft",
"companyUrl": "https://www.linkedin.com/company/microsoft",
"from": "Feb 2014",
"isCurrent": true
},
{
"title": "Board Member",
"companyName": "Starbucks",
"companyUrl": "https://www.linkedin.com/company/starbucks",
"from": "2017",
"to": "2024",
"isCurrent": false
}
],
"education": [
{
"school": "University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee",
"degree": "Master’s Degree Computer Science",
"schoolUrl": "https://www.linkedin.com/school/uwmilwaukee"
}
]
},
"creditsUsed": 2
}

roles lists every job on the profile with its dates, and isCurrent marks the ones the person still holds. companyUrl is a LinkedIn company link, so you can send it to the company endpoint to read about the employer. followers is the follower count, which is not the same as connections.

If the person has no public profile, you get an error and not a profile. I tried a made up slug and the API answered with this message.

error
LinkedIn has no public profile at that URL. Check profileUrl or profileId; the person may hide their profile from visitors who are not signed in.

Honest take. The API needs a key and a few lines of code, so it is the wrong pick for one profile you could open yourself. It is the right pick when you have a list, because every profile comes back in the same shape with the same field names.

3. Ask an AI agent to read the profile through MCP

If you already work in Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, let the agent do the lookup. Add the Stophy MCP server once.

terminal
claude mcp add --transport http stophy https://mcp.stophy.dev/mcp

In Claude Code, run /mcp, select stophy and select Authenticate. You sign in to Stophy with your browser and the setup has no API key. You still do not need a LinkedIn account.

Then ask in plain words. For example, ask which boards a CEO has sat on, and paste the profile link. The agent searches the endpoints, finds linkedinProfile and calls it. I made the call by hand to see what the agent sends.

response
{
"id": "linkedinProfile",
"input": { "profileId": "satyanadella" },
"fields": ["name", "headline", "roles"]
}

fields keeps only the named keys, so the agent uses fewer tokens. The response had the name, the headline and the same roles list as the API, with creditsUsed set to 2.

Honest take. This is the fastest way to ask a question about one person, and the slowest way to read two hundred profiles, because each lookup passes through the model. For bulk work use the API. The setup for each agent is on the MCP page.

What you cannot read

LinkedIn controls what is public, and the profile endpoint returns what LinkedIn shows to a visitor who is not signed in. That sets the limits.

  • A private profile returns not found. So does a link to a profile that no longer exists.
  • The response has no email address, no phone number and no list of connections.
  • A person can hide parts of their public profile. Those parts are missing from the response.

Use this for the reasons a person would expect, such as checking a contact before a call or a meeting. Do not use it to build a file on a private individual.

What a LinkedIn profile costs

Reading by hand is free. The API and the agent charge credits from your Stophy balance.

ResultCredits
A profile comes back2
Not found0
An error0

A new account has 1,000 credits, which is enough for 500 profiles. A top-up of 1,000 credits costs between $0.80 and $1.50 depending on the size, so a profile costs between 0.16 and 0.3 cents. The CLI and MCP cost the same, and all three use one balance. You pay only when a profile comes back.

Which way to pick

For one profile, open it by hand in a logged-out browser. It is free, and you see exactly what LinkedIn shows the public.

For a list of profiles or a feature in your product, use the API. For a question about one person while you work, ask your agent.

Frequently asked questions

Can you view a LinkedIn profile without logging in?

Yes, for profiles that the person has made public, but you see a limited version. LinkedIn's help says a public profile is a simplified version and that visitors may need to log in to see a full profile. A private profile does not show at all.

How do I view a LinkedIn profile without an account?

Open the profile link in a browser where you are not signed in. If you only have a name, search for it with a search engine. If you need the data as text or JSON, send the profile link to the LinkedIn profile API. That needs a Stophy key and no LinkedIn account.

Is there a LinkedIn profile viewer?

The name covers two different things. LinkedIn's "Who's viewed your profile" shows who looked at your own profile. A tool that lets you view someone else's profile is what this post describes. Stophy has no free viewer for LinkedIn, and the profile call needs a key.

Does LinkedIn show who viewed a profile?

It can. LinkedIn's help says what the person sees depends on your viewing settings. They can see your name and headline, a few details about you, or only "LinkedIn Member" in private mode. When you are signed out, you have no such settings to choose.

Is there a free LinkedIn profile API?

Not a free one. The profile call needs an API key and costs 2 credits. A new Stophy account has 1,000 credits, so you can read 500 profiles before you pay anything.

What does the LinkedIn profile API return?

One profile. It has profileId, profileUrl, name, headline, location, about, followers, roles and education. Each role has title, companyName, companyUrl, from, to and isCurrent. Fields the person hides are left out.

Can I get someone's email or phone number?

No. The response has no email, no phone number and no connections. LinkedIn does not show them to the public, so the endpoint cannot return them.

Why did I get a not found error?

LinkedIn has no public profile at that link. The slug may be wrong, the profile may be private, or the person may hide it from visitors who are not signed in. A not found call costs nothing.

Can Claude or Cursor read a LinkedIn profile?

Yes, through MCP. Add the Stophy server to Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, paste a profile link and ask your question. The agent calls the profile endpoint and answers from the roles and the headline.

Can I read a company page the same way?

Yes. The company endpoint takes a company link or slug and returns its size, industry and headquarters. It costs 1 credit.
