How to add a Reddit MCP server to Claude Code
Give Claude Code live Reddit search with one command. Find threads, read the comments and see what people recommend, with no Reddit app to register.
To add a Reddit MCP server to Claude Code, run one command and sign in to Stophy in your browser. Claude Code can then search Reddit, read the comments on a thread and browse a community, and you register no Reddit app. Stophy is the web data API for AI agents, and its MCP server includes Reddit.
I ran the Reddit calls below with the Stophy CLI, which uses the same endpoints as the MCP server. The output is real and trimmed. The setup takes about two minutes.
The short version
| Step | What you do | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Add the server | Run claude mcp add with the Stophy address | Free |
| 2. Sign in | Run /mcp in Claude Code, pick stophy, choose Authenticate | Free, 1,000 credits to start |
| 3. Ask | Ask about Reddit in plain words | 1 credit per call that returns data |
What is a Reddit MCP server?
MCP is the way an agent like Claude Code uses outside tools. A Reddit MCP server is a tool the agent can call to get Reddit data. The agent decides when to search, which thread to open and what to read, then answers from what came back.
Without one, an agent can only guess from what it learned in training, or open pages one at a time. With one, it gets posts and comments as structured data it can sort and compare.
Why give an agent Reddit
Reddit is where people say what they think. A review site shows stars. A Reddit thread shows why someone returned a laptop, which tool they dropped after a month and what fixed their error at 2am.
- Real opinions. People compare products and tools in their own words.
- Recommendations. Threads like best keyboard under a budget have years of answers in the comments.
- Troubleshooting. The fix for an odd error is often in a thread with 40 replies and no blog post.
An agent that reads those threads can answer a question like which tool should I pick with what people actually report. I think that is the best reason to wire Reddit into a coding agent.
1. Add the server to Claude Code
Run this once in your terminal. It adds the Stophy MCP server to Claude Code.
Then open Claude Code and run /mcp. Pick stophy and choose Authenticate. Your browser opens, you sign in to Stophy, and Claude Code shows the server as connected. The full setup for each agent is on the Stophy MCP page.
The sign in is to Stophy. At no point do you create a Reddit app, copy a Reddit client id or sign in to Reddit. The Reddit endpoints take no Reddit credentials as input. They take things like a search query, a subreddit name or a post link.
Honest take. There is no config file and no key to paste, which keeps this short. The step people miss is Authenticate, so do not skip it.
2. What the agent can do with Reddit
The agent gets three tools. stophy_search_endpoints finds an endpoint from plain words, stophy_describe_endpoint shows its inputs and stophy_call runs it. I listed the Reddit endpoints with the CLI, which uses the same ids.
| Endpoint | What it returns |
|---|---|
| reddit.search | Posts, subreddits or users that match a query |
| reddit.post | One post and a page of its comments |
| reddit.subreddit | A community's info and a page of its posts |
| reddit.subreddits | Popular or newest communities |
| reddit.user | A user's profile with their posts and comments |
| reddit.domain | Posts that link to a website |
| reddit.discussions | Other places one link was shared |
Each costs 1 credit. In the MCP server the ids are camelCase, so reddit.search is redditSearch. Run stophy describe reddit.post to see the inputs of any one of them.
3. Ask what people recommend
Ask Claude Code something like this.
The agent calls redditSearch. This is the same call from the CLI.
It returned 25 posts. Here are three, with the long text field left out.
A search returns posts, not comments. Each post has its score and comment count, so the agent can tell which threads are worth opening. That costs 1 credit. The free Reddit search tool runs the same search in your browser, and the Reddit search API page lists every filter.
4. Read the comments on a thread
Now ask for the discussion itself.
The agent finds the thread with redditSearch, then opens it with redditPost. Here is the CLI call with the post id.
The response has the post fields at the top level and the comments in a results list. I cut it to the first two comments and shortened the text.
The comments come as a flat list in thread order. depth and parentId let the agent rebuild who replied to whom, and isSubmitter marks the person who wrote the post. This call returned 30 comments for a post that shows 38, with no cursor. I did not look into the gap, so do not assume every comment on a large thread comes back. See the Reddit comments API page for the fields.
5. Scan a community
To get the mood of a community, ask the agent to read the top posts of the week.
The response has the community's name, description, member count and rules, then a page of posts. When I ran it, r/ClaudeAI had 1,179,604 members and 12 rules, and the page held 25 posts with a cursor for the next page.
What works without a key and what needs one
Two things are easy to mix up here, so here they are apart.
- Reddit search works without a Stophy API key over REST and in the free tool, within a daily limit. No account is needed there.
- The MCP server asks you to sign in to Stophy with your browser. That is a Stophy account, not a Reddit one.
- The other six Reddit endpoints need a Stophy account in every case.
What it costs
Every Reddit endpoint costs 1 credit for a call that returns data. A new account has 1,000 credits, so that is 1,000 calls. A call that returns an error or an empty list costs nothing. Finding a thread and reading its comments takes 2 credits.
An agent that searches, opens three threads and scans one community uses 5 credits. Prices for larger top-ups are on the pricing page.
What does not work
- The agent cannot post, comment, vote or log in to Reddit. The endpoints read public data.
- Search matches words, so a long query can return nothing. I searched r/MechanicalKeyboards for best budget mechanical keyboard and got an empty list. It cost 0 credits. best mechanical keyboard returned 25 posts. Keep queries short and let the agent retry.
- Search returns posts. For comments the agent has to open the post with redditPost.
- Large threads may not come back whole, as in the 30 of 38 above.
Which way to connect
- Use the MCP server when you work in Claude Code and want the agent to pick the call. This post is that route.
- Use the CLI in a script or a scheduled job. Every call above ran from it.
- Use the TypeScript or Python SDK when Reddit data goes into your own app.
- Use one balance for all three. A call costs the same through each.
FAQ
What is a Reddit MCP server?
It is a tool that lets an AI agent search Reddit and read threads through the Model Context Protocol. The agent calls it like a function and gets posts and comments back as data. Stophy's server also covers other sites, so one connection gives the agent Reddit and more.
Do I need a Reddit API key or a Reddit app?
No. You sign in to Stophy and nothing else. The Reddit endpoints take a query, a subreddit name or a post link, and no Reddit credentials.
How do I add the Reddit MCP server to Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add --transport http stophy https://mcp.stophy.dev/mcp. Then run /mcp in Claude Code, pick stophy and choose Authenticate.
Is the Reddit MCP server free?
A new account has 1,000 credits and each Reddit call costs 1 credit. Errors and empty results cost 0. Reddit search is also free without an account in the Reddit search tool, within a daily limit.
Can Claude Code read Reddit comments?
Yes. The agent finds a thread with search and opens it with the post endpoint, which returns the comments with their score, depth and parent. A very large thread can come back with fewer comments than Reddit shows.
Can Claude Code post to Reddit with this?
No. The server reads public data. It cannot post, comment, vote or send messages.
Does it work in Codex or Cursor?
Yes. Any agent that supports MCP over HTTP with OAuth can use it. The setup for each is on the MCP page.
Why did my Reddit search return nothing?
Search matches the words you give it, so a long phrase can match no post. Shorten it to two or three words, or drop the subreddit filter. An empty result costs 0 credits.
What is the best Reddit API for AI agents?
For an agent, I would pick the one it can call without a setup step of its own. The MCP route here needs one command and one sign in, and it returns flat JSON. If you write code instead, the Reddit API for agents has the same data over REST.
Can I use it from a script instead of an agent?
Yes. The CLI and the SDKs use the same endpoints and the same balance. Add --json to a CLI command to print the data.
